Chances are you’re a careful consumer. You can be a cautious contributor, too, by following some simple guidelines for intelligent giving.
-
Ask for a charity’s exact name and address. If a solicitor approaches you in person, insist on seeing some identification.
-
Request a copy of the charity’s annual report, budget, audited financial statements and list of board members. You are also entitled to their most recent tax returns at no charge beyond the copying costs and postage. Tax forms are a good way to find out how much a charity pays its top executives.
-
Ask whether solicitors are volunteers or employees of the charity itself or work for a fund-raising firm. If the latter, ask how much of your contribution would go to the charity.
-
Report the use of illegal or unethical tactics to your local Better Business Bureau, state attorney general or police.
