What a Bank Will Need From You

Any financial institution you explore will also have questions for you. A bank will require proof that you are who you say you are before opening an account. Be prepared to provide the following:

  • A photo ID (driver's license, passport or student ID)
  • Your Social Security number
  • Address verification. A utility bill with your current address will suffice.
  • Your signature on a card or form that will be kept on file by your bank. While some banks will initiate an account over the telephone, they will run a check with a credit agency to verify the information. Expect to visit the bank to provide a picture ID and signature to formally establish the account.
