Handling your own move allows you to move at your convenience and to give extra care to your prized possessions. Usually it's less costly than hiring professional movers (unless you throw out your back lifting that piano). The downside is that you'll probably need to rent and drive an unfamiliar truck and rely on family and friends to help.

Before renting a truck, figure out what size you'll need. Consult the internet for truck rental agencies, and call around to compare prices. Reserve the truck at least one week ahead of your move and allow even more time during peak moving seasons or on weekends. Don't forget to reserve furniture pads and dollies or hand trucks at the same time. Check your homeowners or auto insurance policies to see if rented trucks and your possessions are covered while moving. If not, consider buying insurance from the truck rental agency.

When packing the truck, put heavy items in first so that the bulk of the weight is toward the front. Remember, driving a truck is different from driving a car. Drive cautiously and allow extra room between your truck and other vehicles. Also, be wary of your clearance under low bridges and overpasses.
