The U.S. is in the midst of a demographic revolution. In 2011, the first Baby Boomers will begin turning 65. By the year 2030, the 65+ population is expected to double, reaching 71 million in number and representing 20% of the U.S. population.
Currently, Americans age 85 and older represent the fastest growing segment of the population. Their numbers are expected to quadruple between now and 2050, growing to 20.9 million people.
Developing a healthy lifestyle as we age can help us not only live longer, but live better. While factors beyond our control, such as genetics and environment, play a role in our health, it’s also true that wellness is related to the choices we make every day. By adopting a lifestyle rooted in good nutrition, fitness, social involvement and continued learning, we can achieve or maintain a healthy lifestyle. And, it’s never too early or too late to get started and realize the benefits.
