Why are Organ and Tissue Donations Important?

Organ donation saves lives. A transplanted heart, lung, kidney, pancreas or intestine can provide the gift of life for someone in need. Tissue transplants are also vital, as they can fight infections in burn victims, prevent the loss of arms or legs and restore eyesight.

As technology is perfected, the number of people who could benefit from organ donations is rising steadily. However, while more organs are needed, the number of organs available for transplant remains relatively constant. That causes the shortage of organs to become more critical every year.
