For years people assumed newborns were passive beings that did little but eat, sleep and cry. Today we realize infants are very much aware of the world around them. They respond to sensory stimulation, and love looking at human faces.
Infants can follow back and forth motions as early as three days after birth. Gradually, they begin to recognize the various rhythms of people’s voices. Your baby may become very animated at times, kicking, waving his or her arms and smiling, responding to your special rhythm.
Safety checks for the first and second months:
-
Car safety: Always drive with your baby in a car seat and carefully follow the manufacturer’s directions. The middle seat in the back of the car is the safest place.* Never place your baby in the front seat.
-
Crib safety: Always place your baby on his or her back while in the crib. Don’t leave pillows, sheep skin or other soft materials near by.
-
Bath safety: Use the minimum amount of water needed. If the tub or sink does not have a non-slip bottom, place a wash cloth there to keep the baby from slipping. If possible, turn the maximum temperature on your hot water heater down to 125 degrees.
