Avoiding Identity Theft

While there is no sure way of preventing identity fraud, the following steps can help you minimize your risk:

  • Don't carry extra credit cards. Cancel any credit card accounts that you don't use.
  • Make sure you recognize all entries on your monthly credit card statements.
  • Don't simply throw away papers containing financial information or identifiers. Instead, first shred or otherwise destroy any such papers.
  • Don't give out your social security number unless you have to do so. Don't give it out over the Internet or the telephone.
  • Check your credit report regularly, at least once or twice a year. Make sure you recognize all entries.
