Boxing It Up

Once you've selected a mover, decide what you'll pack yourself and what needs to be professionally packed. Remember that packing yourself saves money, but most movers will not accept liability for breakage of any items you pack.
If you're doing your own packing, the guideline is to start a month before your move. You'll need the following:

  • Boxes. Get lots of them in a range of sizes. They should be sturdy and have tops. Get free boxes from liquor stores, supermarkets or your office. You also can buy boxes from a truck rental agency or moving company, but that can be expensive.
  • Tape, string and scissors. Large rolls of 2-inch wide packing tape and sturdy twine work well.
  • Marking pens to label boxes.
  • Plastic bags, tissue paper, newspapers and small towels for padding.

Be sure to label your boxes carefully. You'll want to specify the room a box is destined for and include a brief description of the contents. Label on the side of the box, not the top. A few other packing tips follow:

  • Pack your TV, stereo and computer in their original boxes whenever possible.
  • Place china in plastic bags and stack plates upright on their edges, not flat.
  • Keep boxes to 50 pounds or less.
  • Do not move flammables.

If the professional movers are packing most of your belongings, you'll need to schedule packing days. When the movers begin packing, they will inventory your possessions and describe any existing damage. Make sure you get a copy of the inventory form. It will help you check in your belongings as they are unloaded at your new home.

The movers will not unload at your new home until you pay them. Find out in advance what method of payment your carrier will accept; you'll probably need a money order or certified check. Have the movers place boxes in the appropriate rooms. Once your belongings are unloaded, note any missing or obviously damaged items on the driver's copy of the inventory sheet. When your move is complete, you may want to tip the driver. It's optional, but giving the driver a modest tip is a nice thank you.

When unpacking at the end of your move, don't open all the boxes at once. It only creates confusion. Instead, unpack one room and one box at a time.
