When a flash flood or flood warning is issued, observe the following precautions:
- If you are asked to evacuate by local officials, do so at once, before safe escape routes are shut down.
- If you need to evacuate and you're absolutely certain you have time, shut off water, electricity, and above-ground, outdoor propane gas tanks. Move valuables to a high area, such as the second floor of your home.
- Don't cross flowing water on foot if the water is above your ankles.
- Never drive over a flooded road. Barricades are put up for your protection. If you come upon a flooded road or a barricade, turn around and find another route. (Keep in mind that road beds may not be intact under flood water and that two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.)
- If your car stalls, get out and climb to higher ground.
- Don't go near areas prone to sudden flash flooding, including canyons, dry washes, stream beds, drainage ditches or low areas.
- Keep listening to the radio for news about what to do, where to go and places to avoid.
- Be particularly careful driving at night, when it's more difficult to recognize flood dangers.
- Don't camp or park along streams during threatening conditions.
