After the Hurricane

If you had to evacuate, return only when local authorities say it is safe to do so. Observe the following safety precautions:

  • Watch for downed power lines and report them to the proper authorities
  • Report broken or damaged water, gas and sewer lines.
  • Stay off the roadways whenever possible

If you must go out, avoid flooded roads, bridges or causeways.

  • Make sure buildings are structurally sound before entering them.
  • Don't use tap water until you are advised that it is safe.
  • Watch for food contamination. Use canned or boxed foods. Food in the freezer may last a few days if the door to the freezer is kept closed.
