Frequently Asked Questions
Group Variable Universal Life

Your Choices Include...

  • Converting Your Group Life Insurance Policy to an Individual Insurance Policy
You may be eligible* to convert the group life coverage you enjoyed with your most recent employer to your own personal policy.  The individual life policy is issued without you having to provide evidence of insurability - no medical exams and no medical questions.

  • Applying for an Individual (Non-Conversion) Life Insurance Policy
You may find that the individual insurance policy you can obtain through the conversion process does not meet your needs. In that case, you have the option to apply for your own medically underwritten life insurance policy, simultaneous with the conversion process.  If you meet MetLife’s insurance underwriting guidelines, an individual underwritten life policy will be issued, rather than a conversion policy. If you do not meet these guidelines, your application will be declined and a conversion policy will be issued without any lapse in coverage.

  • Porting Your Group Life Insurance Policy**
Portability is a feature available on some Group Term Life (Basic Life, Optional Life, Dependent Life) insurance plans, which allows employees whose coverage would ordinarily end due to certain events to continue their insurance on a self-paid basis without providing medical evidence of insurability.  If available, your employer will provide you with an election form which will give you rates and instructions on how to process.

For more information and to speak to a MetLife Advice representative call 1-866-492-6983 for Portability questions and 1-877-275-6387 for Conversion questions.
