Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance provides around-the-clock coverage for employees in the event of accidental death, severe injuries, or paralysis resulting from accidents on or off the job.

MetLife offers a variety of AD&D coverages to help round out employee benefit packages, and several innovative features add even greater value to our products, showing concern for employees' financial security while maintaining operating costs.

Basic Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D): Generally employer-paid, Basic AD&D typically provides an accidental death benefit equal to an employee's basic term life insurance amount. Basic AD&D also provides specified percentages of an employee's basic accidental death benefit amount for qualifying injuries.

Supplemental Accidental Death & Dismemberment: Employee-pay-all (voluntary) supplemental coverage is available for employees as a "double indemnity" death benefit when coupled with Supplemental Term Life and death occurs from an accident. In addition, specified percentages of an employee's supplemental accidental death benefit are provided for qualifying injuries.

Dependent Accidental Death & Dismemberment: Employee-pay-all (voluntary) DAD&D coverage is available for spouses and eligible dependent children.

Voluntary Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (VAD&D): An employee-pay-all (voluntary) coverage that allows employees to choose higher levels of protection against qualifying injuries or death for themselves, their spouses or eligible dependent children.

VAD&D protection also includes the following benefits for qualifying accidental injuries or accidental death:

The Family Protection Plan Plus:
Automatic VAD&D coverage for spouse and children based on a percentage of the covered employee's benefit. In addition, this plan includes a hospitalization benefit, a common disaster feature and child care and spouse and child education benefits.

Plan Enhancements

Travel Assistance,1  is a valuable enhancement to Basic, Supplemental and Voluntary AD&D coverages, as well as Business Travel Accident Insurance. This benefit gives employers and their employees access to emergency services such as: medical assistance, guaranteed hospital admission and political evacuation when they are traveling 100 miles from their home. They also receive support for non-emergencies including financial and legal assistance. These services are offered through a relationship with AXA Assistance USA, Inc., an industry leader in travel assistance.

Identity Theft Solutions, an additional benefit packaged with Travel Assistance, educates employees and dependents on preventing an occurrence and provides personal assistance and guidance to help alleviate the stress and time burden that victims face. Employees are provided with:

  • Education and Protection including: the identity theft risk & prevention tool kit and resolution guide.
  • Personal Guidance including: filing and obtaining police and credit reports, contacting creditor fraud departments, taking inventory of lost or stolen items and more.

Employees don’t have to be traveling to use this benefit; it is accessible whether they are home or away.

Waiver of Premium:  Allows covered employees to receive death benefit coverage after life insurance coverage ends, if they become totally disabled and are not at work due to such disability. "Waiver of Premium" waives premium for totally disabled employees after a specified waiting period.

Portability2: Plan provision which allows employees to continue their coverage when employment ends due to voluntary termination, retirement, or dismissal; or when they are no longer classified as an eligible class for benefits.

Seatbelt benefit: Additional benefits for covered individuals who die as a result of injuries sustained while driving or riding in a private passenger car while wearing a properly fastened seat belt.

Total Control Account® (TCA): The TCA Money Market Option is the standard settlement option for group D&D claims of $5,000 or more. The TCA helps protect the financial security of beneficiaries and offers immediate access to and control of their insurance proceeds via check-writing privileges. The money in the TCA, plus the interest earned, are fully guaranteed by MetLife.

Like most group accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies, MetLife group policies contain certain exceptions, reductions, limitations and terms for keeping them in force. Please contact us for costs and complete details.
