Each Portfolio invests in a variety of securities. Securities generally fall into two main categories: equity and fixed-income. Some Porfolios invest primarily, or in part, in foreign equity or foreign fixed-income securities.
Equity Securities
Equity securities may include common stocks, preferred stocks, warrants, convertible stocks and other instruments related to common and preferred stocks.
Fixed Income Securities
Fixed income securities, including bonds, notes, and U.S. and other government securities, represent an obligation of a company or other issuer to repay money that it has borrowed. Generally, the issuer agrees to pay the investor interest in return for the use of the money until the maturity date, as set forth in the terms of the security.
Foreign Securities
Some portfolios invest primarily, or in part, in foreign equity or fixed income securities. Generally, foreign securities, including equity depositary receipts, are securities of issuers organized or headquartered outside the United States or primarily traded outside the United States. Although foreign securities may increase a Portfolio’s diversification, foreign securities tend to be more volatile than U.S. securities for reasons such as political, social or economic uncertainties and/or less regulation of foreign issuers. These risks are heightened for securities of issuers in developing, emerging market countries. Movements in prices in foreign securities markets may not correlate with prices in the U.S. stock market.
