Delivering the Promise when you lose someone

At MetLife, taking care of beneficiaries — Delivering the Promise — is probably the single most important thing we do.

If you've lost someone you love, the last thing you want to think about is your financial affairs. That's why we do our best to make sure beneficiaries receive all the benefits to which they are entitled as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Filing your claim is generally simple and straightforward

Start by calling 1-800-MET-LIFE (1-800-638-5433).

We've made the process of filing a claim as simple as possible, so you can focus your energies on your family. To file a claim, you'll generally need to submit three things:

• A completed Statement of Claim, a form that includes such things as your full name and address (or those of the beneficiary or beneficiaries). Call 1-800-MET-LIFE to obtain the right form, or ask your MetLife Representative.

• A certified death certificate showing the date, place, and cause of death.

• The original insurance policy(ies), if available.

If you feel overwhelmed during this difficult time, ask to speak to or see a Delivering the Promise Specialist. He or she can offer extra assistance in filing your claim — and much more. Just ask, and we can also help you:

• Identify important issues to be addressed, such as retitling assets and changing records
• Determine if you're entitled to government benefits
• Review your active insurance polices — such as health, life, and pensions — to make certain you're well covered
• Locate quality grief counselors and resources in your area

Are you concerned about having to make long-term decisions with your benefit funds during a difficult time? We created the Total Control Account settlement option for you.

We pay most claims of $5,000 or more by establishing a Total Control Account settlement option, an interest-bearing account with checkwriting privileges, in your name (assuming you are the beneficiary). That way, you can take all the time you need to make well thought-out decisions regarding the proceeds, while it earns a competitive interest rate and remains easily accessible.
