METLIFE OFFERS NEW DISABILITY/ HEALTH AND WELLNESS INTEGRATED SOLUTION

NEW YORK, June 10, 2010 – MetLife, a leading provider of employee benefits, today announced the availability of its new Disability Health and Wellness Connection, a program designed to help companies engage employees in managing their health and potentially reduce the number and duration of disability-related absences. The program is offered at no additional cost to new and current group customers with 3,000 or more employees.

“Employees with a disability-related illness or injury or who are living with a chronic health condition are among the highest users of an employer’s medical benefits – underscoring the importance of coordinating management of these claims to more effectively control costs and aid employees in their recovery. Since employees experiencing a serious medical situation typically have heightened receptivity to health and wellness information and programs that can improve their circumstances, the MetLife Disability Health and Wellness Connection helps employers leverage this timing and give employees access to the additional assistance they need,” said Paul Taylor, vice president, Group Disability Products, MetLife.

By promoting the use of employers’ existing employee assistance programs (EAPs), health and wellness programs and disease management programs, MetLife’s Disability Health and Wellness Connection can assist employers in achieving their primary benefits objectives of controlling costs and improving employee productivity. Since 70% of employees say they participate in wellness programs because they desire good health, according to MetLife’s 8th Annual Study of Employee Benefits Trends, receipt of a disability claim can be an optimal time to make sure employees are aware of the employer’s programs that may help in their recovery and better manage their health for the long-term.

MetLife’s Disability Health and Wellness Connection works with employers’ current medical carriers, wellness providers and disease management providers to improve employees’ understanding of wellness programs through education, and helps facilitate access to plan providers’ information for employees throughout the duration of a disability claim. Additionally, Disability Health and Wellness Connection helps employers promote a healthier workforce by identifying trends and top drivers impacting absenteeism and health plan costs.

MetLife has been providing employers with quality disability products and services for over 50 years and is a leading disability carrier in the industry, with over $2.35 billion of premiums and equivalents in force, according to the 2009 U.S. Group Disability Survey, LIMRA International. MetLife Disability was recently listed as the largest group disability carrier on Workforce Management’s 2010 Hot List of group disability insurance carriers.
