METLIFE RECOGNIZED BY EPA AS LEADER IN GREEN POWER PURCHASING
Ranks No. 21 On EPA’s List Of Top 500 Companies for its Green Power Purchases
NEW YORK, May 3, 2011 – MetLife, Inc. (NYSE: MET) has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a leader in its Green Power Partnership program and has ranked the company number 21 among the top 500 largest companies for its green power purchasing. MetLife is expected to purchase more than 65 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually throughout its U.S. operations, which is enough green power to meet 53 percent of the organization's electricity use. Green power is electricity produced from a subset of renewable resources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and low-impact hydro.
MetLife’s purchase also qualifies it to join EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded the EPA’s minimum purchase requirements. Green Power Leadership Club members must purchase ten times the partnership’s minimum requirement organization-wide.
“We are delighted to be recognized by the EPA as a leader in green power purchasing,” said John Vazquez, vice president, vendor sourcing and corporate services. “Purchasing green power helps reduce the environmental impact of electricity usage and encourages the development of renewable energy capabilities. MetLife is committed to environmental sustainability and supporting the development of clean energy alternatives.”
MetLife is taking significant actions to address sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, implementing recycling programs in its facilities and conserving natural resources by investing in renewable energy projects. To date, MetLife has invested more than $1.7 billion in renewable energy ventures. In addition, all 14 of MetLife’s corporate owned and/or operated U.S. buildings are Energy Star certified.
