Leave of Absence

Leave of absences are available to you to take time away for various reasons, and they can either be paid or unpaid.

What is a leave of absence?

You may take a leave of absence if you need time away for various situations, including recovering from an illness or injury, welcoming a new child, taking time away to care for your seriously ill loved ones, serving your country, or taking time for your own personal reasons.

What is Paid Family & Medical Leave?

Many states offer state-mandated Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML), Paid Family Leave (PFL), or temporary Disability Insurance (DI) benefits, which enable you to request a wage replacement benefit and/or leave if you cannot work because you are sick or hurt or due to a family matter such as bonding with a new child, caring for a family member who has a serious health condition or to address a qualifying military exigency. The applicable qualifying reasons for leave and/or benefits depend on your work state. Not all states offer PFML, PFL, or DI benefits.

Depending on where you work, you may be eligible for state-mandated PFML, PFL, or DI benefits to help you or a family member who is sick or injured or has an approved medical condition. Income you receive or are eligible to receive from the state is deducted from any approved Wells Fargo STD and paid leave benefits, and you receive or are eligible to receive PFML, PFL, or DI income directly from the state. Many but not all state leaves run concurrently with federal leaves. Please contact MetLife to learn about how these state benefits coordinate with unpaid leaves of absence, or offset Wells Fargo paid leaves, and disability plans.

What is the Family & Medical Leave Act?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that provides eligible employees with the right to take unpaid, job-protected leave for qualifying events without interference or restraint from their employers. Job protection under the FMLA means that employees who use this leave have the right to return to the same job or an equivalent job with the same pay, benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment, with limited exceptions. The United States does not have a national paid family and medical leave program.
