MetLife responds to disaster in Chile
A major wildfire started over the weekend in the hills above the city of Valparaíso, Chile, just a few miles from Santiago. The mix of winds, temperature and humidity, combined with the lack of appropriate infrastructure, resulted in the most devastating fire in the history of the city.
Almost 3,000 homes have been destroyed by the fire, and more than 12,000 people have been displaced as a result.
To assist with the relief effort, the local team in Chile and MetLife Foundation worked together to provide a $300,000 donation to the devastated area. The donation will support the Techo Foundation and enable the organization to build 110 basic equipped homes in the city while the rebuilding efforts take place, helping provide a temporary place to live for those who were forced to evacuate.
"Being able to leverage this response quickly, in a time of need for so many people, really makes me proud to be a part of MetLife," said Oscar Schmidt, CEO of Latin America and head of U.S. Sponsored Direct.
