Empowering women in Latin America by providing them access to financial services

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, 6.91 million households out of 28.15 million, are led by women in Mexico. Promoting the development of women and social enterprise is therefore key to the overall economic development of the country.

MetLife Foundation has partnered with Pro Mujer, to provide access to knowledge and the appropriate products and services to help these low-income women pursue more from life. Pro Mujer is a leading organization for social development and microfinance dedicated to tackling poverty and empowering women in the region

With the help of the MetLife Foundation, Pro Mujer has been able to establish a neighborhood center in Oaxaca, Mexico, and launch 35 women's community associations.

The new Pro Mujer center is providing the women of Oaxaca with the necessary tools to create and improve their own businesses in order to achieve a higher standard of living for their families. The center's clients have access to an integral package of financial services, business training, human development and health services. The Foundation is supporting the opening of another new center in Mexico City later this year.

"The Foundation's new mission is focused on enabling people in need to improve their quality of life by providing them with access to knowledge and financial services," said Nalleli Garcia, coordinator, MetLife Mexico Foundation. "We are committed to the creation of opportunities for people so that they can improve their standard of living."
