Disaster Relief and Recovery

When disaster hits, MetLife Foundation helps mobilize our teams, funds, and on-the-ground partners to assist communities in recovering and rebuilding quickly and safely.

Australia fires and the Ohio tornado

MetLife Foundation partners with on-the-ground nonprofits to assist with funding and other support in times of disaster recovery. In 2019, we partnered with the Red Cross to support those impacted by the Australia fires, helping affected communities recover, as well as expanding cash grants to people who lost their homes in the bushfires. MetLife Foundation matched every employee donation, increasing its reach and impact. We also donated $35,000 to the Red Cross to assist people in the aftermath of the Dayton, Ohio, tornado.

MetLife Foundation commits $25 million toward COVID-19

More recently, in March 2020, MetLife Foundation committed to donating $25 million toward COVID-19 relief along with $1 million to food banks across the U.S. to help them deal with increased demand for their services as a result of coronavirus. The Foundation made coronavirus relief its immediate focus area to help mitigate the crisis, donating funds and matching employee contributions. In our communities around the world, MetLife and MetLife Foundation have donated money and medical supplies, transformed our properties, and volunteered our time to help those affected by the pandemic. In addition, our President and CEO was appointed to the New York Forward Re-Opening Advisory Council, joining a list of 100 experts from the business, labor, and civic sectors.

To help protect first responders and others, MetLife donated thousands of medical supplies to locations around the world, including facemasks, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. We also made MetLife-owned properties available as hospitals and housing for healthcare workers and established a new paid voluntary leave program for our ‘in-house’ medical professionals to help fight COVID-19. MetLife medical professionals who volunteer will be deployed in two-week rotations to hospitals and other healthcare facilities in locations across the country.

MetLife Foundation also allocated almost $600,000 worth of grants in 15 EMEA markets to help provide emergency aid, food, and assistance, including the provision of protective equipment to frontline health workers and care providers, support for food banks, and help for those in desperate need. We also confirmed several additional grants for 2020 in multiple markets including:

  • Spain: to provide personal protective equipment for nursing staff and patients at Madrid’s Hospital Universitario La Paz.
  • Italy: to the Red Cross and Fondazion Buzzi to provide additional beds, medical equipment, and supplies for Milan’s Buzzi Hospital and other hospitals in the Lombardy region.
  • U.K.: to provide food support for low-income families through a Brighton food bank.
  • France: to provide the Fondation des Hôpitaux de Paris with equipment and other support in public hospitals.
  • Egypt: to address food insecurity among low-income families through the Egypt Food Bank.

Since its founding in 1976, MetLife Foundation has contributed more than $860 million to create stronger communities.
