Benefit Information

Because you’re a valued employee, your employer has arranged for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) to offer you the opportunity to purchase supplemental disability insurance.

The ability to earn an income is probably your most valuable asset.

The risk of a disability occurring during your working years may be greater than you think. What would happen if you were unable to earn an income due to illness or injury? How would you pay your mortgage, car loan or tuition?

By replacing a portion of your income, disability insurance can help provide financial security until you get back on your feet and return to work.

Already have disability insurance through your employer?

The long term disability (LTD) coverage offered through your employer provides a foundation for income protection, but it may not be enough for you:

  • Many LTD insurance plans offered through employers don't consider bonuses, commissions, or incentive compensation as part of your earnings, and they place a cap on the monthly benefits you can receive.
  • If your employer pays for your LTD coverage, benefits will generally be taxable, reducing the net benefit you receive.

If you have greater income replacement needs, you should consider supplemental disability insurance.

Benefits of Disability Income Gap Insurance

  • Tax-free benefits if you pay your premium using after-tax dollars
  • No medical exam required when you enroll
  • Discounted unisex premiums
  • Convenient payroll deductions of premium payments
  • Portable policy—if you leave your employer, you can take your supplemental disability insurance policy with you

Like most disability income insurance policies, MetLife's policies contain certain exclusions, exceptions, waiting periods, reductions, limitations and terms for keeping them in force. Ask your representative about costs and complete details. All policies, riders and provisions may not be available in all states, at all issue ages and to all occupational classes. Ask your representative for complete details. Eligibility is subject to underwriting approval. For policies issued in New York: These policies provide disability income insurance only. They do NOT provide basic hospital, basic medical or major medical insurance as defined by the New York State Department of Financial Services. The expected benefit ratio for these policies is at least 50%. This ratio is the portion of future premiums that MetLife expects to return as benefits when averaged over all people with the applicable policy.

Disability insurance is issued by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company on IDI2000-P/C-ML, IDI2000-P/GR, AH7-96-CA and AH8-96-CA.
