Executive Vice President and Chief Risk Officer
Marlene Debel is MetLife’s chief risk officer and a member of the Executive Leadership Team. In this role, she is responsible for monitoring, analyzing and managing both financial and non-financial risk for the enterprise.
Debel previously served as executive vice president and head of Retirement & Income Solutions, the company’s institutional retirement business. In this role, Debel oversaw the growth, development and distribution of market leading businesses, including pension risk transfer; annuity and investment products for defined contribution plans; corporate and bank owned life insurance; funding for post-retirement benefits; and structured settlements. She led one of the strongest periods of growth for the business while working to ensure that MetLife delivered on its long-term promises to customers.
Prior to this role, Debel was chief financial officer for the U.S. Business with responsibility for the financial management of businesses in the U.S., including MetLife Holdings. She was appointed to this position in July 2016.
Debel joined MetLife in 2011 as executive vice president and treasurer. In this role, she was responsible for the strategic management of MetLife’s financial resources, including capital management, liquidity risk, cash management, and managing the company’s relationships with both banks and rating agencies. She was also responsible for MetLife’s transition to federal regulation as a non-bank Systemically Important Financial Institution.
Prior to joining MetLife, Debel was global head of liquidity risk management and rating agency relations for Bank of America, where she developed the global liquidity risk strategy for the company. She was also responsible for managing the company’s relationships with rating agencies and fixed income investors. She joined Bank of America with the acquisition of Merrill Lynch. In her 20 years at Merrill Lynch, she held a number of leadership positions, including assistant treasurer.
Debel earned a B.S. in finance, magna cum laude, from the State University of New York at Albany and an M.B.A. in finance from Fordham University. She serves on the boards of Raymond James Financial and the LaGuardia Community College Foundation. She is a former board member of the Women’s Forum of New York.
