Executive Vice President,
Global Technology & Operations
Martin Lippert is executive vice president and head of global technology and operations for MetLife, Inc. He was named to this position in September 2011. In this role, he also oversees global customer call centers and global support services, including global real estate, global corporate security, and global innovation.
Prior to joining MetLife, Lippert served as chief operations and technology officer for Citigroup, where he drove change across a new, centralized global technology and operations division. In this role, he was responsible for a global organization with over 150,000 employees and a budget in excess of $21 billion encompassing technology infrastructure, application development, business operations, real estate, procurement and shared services. While at Citi, he repositioned the division to leverage strengths from one geography to another, which helped drive efficiency and lift product capability during one of the industry's most challenging times.
Previously, Lippert was vice chairman and group head of global technology and operations for Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), the fourth-largest financial institution in North America. Lippert had global responsibility for the strategic direction and effective integration of technology and operations for all of RBC's products, service delivery and support services. During his tenure at RBC, Lippert had responsibility for many of RBC's business divisions, including global financial institutions, cash management, payments, trade finance, investor services and securities lending. Lippert transformed the underlying technology base of the company both in terms of infrastructure and customer-data management. This enabled RBC to make the successful transition from a product-centric to a client-centric enterprise. In surveys by Forrester Research and Gartner Inc., RBC was recognized as "best in class" in technology globally among financial institutions during Lippert's tenure. While at RBC, he served as chairman and CEO of Royal Trust Corporation, chairman of RBC Dexia Trust Corporation and Moneris Solutions, and a member of the board of directors for RBC Insurance. He also had oversight of RBC Ventures, a $500 million technology venture fund.
Lippert began his career in the information technology department of Mellon Bank, where he spent 16 years in progressively responsible positions including chief financial officer of the technology division, culminating in his being named executive vice president for information management and research.
Lippert was a special advisor to the board of Freddie Mac during the financial crisis, and has sat on the board of advisors of the IBM Corporation and Sun Microsystems. He served as chairman of the board for AOL Canada, and was a member of the board of directors for Trillium Health System, one of Canada's largest health care providers.
Lippert has been recognized by American Banker as the top technology executive in North America on multiple occasions and Business 2.0 ranked him as one of the top 10 technology executives globally. He was also awarded the Peter J. Kight Lifetime Achievement Award for innovation in banking.
Lippert holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
