Two investments. One sustainable vision

Jul 14, 2026

From reimagining urban housing to transforming how clean energy reaches major cities, MetLife’s long-term responsible investments are playing a role in shaping a more sustainable future.

These investments help create jobs, support resilient communities and provide economic benefits, demonstrating how capital can be a catalyst for environmental progress, economic growth and community resilience – at both a neighborhood and statewide scale.

Powering New York City with clean, reliable energy

One of the most ambitious clean energy infrastructure projects underway in North America is the Champlain Hudson Power Express® (CHPE) – a 339-mile, high voltage direct current transmission line designed to deliver renewable hydroelectric power from Québec directly into New York City’s local power grid.

MetLife’s $101 million investment in CHPE supports a project that began construction in fall 2022 and entered service late spring  2026. It is anticipated to deliver 1,250 megawatts of clean hydroelectricity – enough to power more than one million homes – while helping New York City reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

CHPE is expected to reduce statewide carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons, while also cutting New York State’s air pollutants by approximately 20%. These reductions directly support New York’s clean energy goal of sourcing 70% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

The majority of the transmission line will be buried underground or submerged beneath waterways such as Lake Champlain and the Hudson River, minimizing visual disruption and improving reliability during extreme weather events.

The project is also delivering meaningful economic and social benefits; construction has invested $6 billion in New York State,  and created 1,400 union jobs. In addition, a new $40 million Green Economy Fund will support clean energy job training, with a focus on disadvantaged communities, low-income individuals and workers transitioning from fossil fuel industries.

Redefining sustainable living in Portland

MetLife’s investment in Splash Apartments underscores how sustainability can be embedded into everyday living. Located in Portland, Oregon, Splash Apartments is part of the first redevelopment phase of the historic Pepsi Pavilion site and includes 219 residential units spanning market rate apartments, townhomes, live/work spaces and affordable housing, along with ground floor commercial space.

At the heart of the project is a state-of-the-art approach to water heating and energy management. The all-electric system eliminates the use of natural gas and relies on air sourced heat pumps paired with smart software that shifts energy use to off-peak hours – allowing the system to meet hot water demand without drawing power during peak times.

This innovative approach has earned national recognition; Splash Apartments has received U.S. Department of Energy recognition for its efficiency, the largest incentive rebate ever issued by the Energy Trust of Oregon and designation as a case study by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. It is also on track to achieve Earth Advantage Platinum certification.

Shared vision for long-term impact

Though different in scale and scope, both investments reflect a shared philosophy: long-term value creation dovetails with positive environmental and social outcomes. These projects show how responsible investment can help build resilient communities, support economic opportunity, and accelerate the transition to a cleaner energy future.

Together, the Champlain Hudson Power Express and Splash Apartments demonstrate how thoughtful, forward-looking investments can create lasting impact – today and for generations to come.
