Dependent Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance

Dependent AD&D insurance provides financial protection if your child dies or suffers a serious injury due to an accident. While it’s a difficult topic, dependent AD&D insurance provides financial protection in the event your child dies or suffers a serious injury (like loss of limbs, sight, or hearing) due to an accident.

Dependent AD&D Schedule of Benefits

Details on your Dependent AD&D benefit can be found in your AD&D Schedule of Benefits, which will list the benefit along with the benefit amount and highlights. Dependent AD&D amounts are listed in their own table called “Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D) On Your Insured Dependents,” which also includes any Spouse AD&D amounts. This appears after the table on your AD&D insurance benefits. Your Dependent AD&D amount is typically a percentage of your employee AD&D amount, for example 20% for one child or 10% for more than one child.

A sample Schedule of Benefits with Spouse and Dependent AD&D insurance is below. Please note that each company’s benefits may differ.

Calculating dependent AD&D rates

Dependent AD&D monthly rates are usually per $1,000 of insurance. To calculate cost, multiply the cost per $1,000 by the number of units selected.

For example, if your employee AD&D is $100,000 and you have one child, your dependent AD&D benefit is $20,000 (according to the Schedule of Benefits above). To figure out the monthly cost for $20,000 in coverage, you would multiply the rate by 20 ($1,000 units).

Ask your employer what your rates are for any supplemental coverages MetLife offers.

How to submit a Dependent AD&D insurance claim

In the event of an accidental death, the AD&D claim will be paid automatically with the Dependent Life insurance claim, so there are no additional steps required for you. In the event of a dismemberment, you or your spouse will need to submit a claim to MetLife for payment.
