When could you use a legal plan?
Big or small, so many of life’s moments require some legal assistance. Some are planned, like getting married, buying a house or creating an estate plan. Others—like tax issues, school hearings or traffic tickets—can pop up when they’re least expected. Having an individual MetLife Legal Plan means having a library of legal resources and a team of legal experts ready when one of those moments occurs.
Safeguarding your finances
Protecting your finances—and your family’s too—is at the heart of many of our most sought-after services. With a legal plan, you’ll have resources to create estate plans, debt and tax resolution support and much more. Say you want to ensure that your legacy is easily passed to your loved ones. An individual legal plan provides the support you need to make that wish a reality.
Growing your family
If you’re thinking about starting or building your family, congratulations! A legal plan can be invaluable as your family grows, providing support with milestones like getting married, adoption or even helping prepare a child for college. For instance, if there’s a wedding in your future, with a legal plan you have the resources you need for a name change, guardianship change or even a prenuptial agreement.

Securing your home
Buying a home or renting an apartment can be one of the most exciting times of your life. But it can also be daunting because it involves making big decisions and financial investments in addition to reviewing contracts like mortgages and rental agreements. A legal plan provides resources and support to help protect your home and your finances.

Managing unexpected events
You can plan for some legal matters, but for others, you can’t. MetLife Legal Plans will still have your back, providing you with the resources you need to confidently manage many unexpected legal situations. What if, for example, you received a traffic ticket that you believe was unwarranted? A legal plan attorney could be a valuable ally in your appeal.

Legal Plan FAQs
Possibly, but not always. Your individual plan will cover many of the core services for personal legal matters and give you access to the same network of attorneys, estate planning tools and self-service documents. Your plan will also include unlimited initial consultations with attorneys except for excluded services.
Your plan will fully cover many of the most frequently needed services for addressing personal legal matters. For fully covered matters, attorney services include document reviews, advice, consultation and representation. You will also be entitled to advice and consultations for an unlimited number of personal legal issues even for matters not fully covered by your plan, as long as they are not excluded.
Excluded services are matters the plan specifically will not provide any coverage for. No services or consultations will be provided for the following:
- Matters involving MetLife or its affiliates, or any Plan Attorney as an adverse party.
- Any employment-related matters.
- Appeals or class actions.
- If your legal plan is sponsored by a company, matters involving that company and its affiliates are excluded.6
- Transactions involving farms or businesses, rental property for which you are the landlord, patent or copyright law, or property held for investment or rental.
- Amounts owed to third parties such as: court costs, filing fees, recording fees, fines, judgements, witness fees, or transcripts.
- Any matter deemed by MetLife to be frivolous, harassing or in contravention of the rules of ethical conduct governing attorneys.
Yes, you may use the legal plan to resolve as many legal issues as possible, even if they are pre-existing matters. The only pre-existing matters that are not covered are those for which you retained an attorney before becoming eligible for plan benefits.
Yes, the plan provides coverage for your dependents, including your spouse, domestic/civil union partner, and your covered children. A child will be covered if he or she is under the Limiting Age (either 26 or 21 depending on your state), is either your natural child, adopted child or stepchild, is unmarried, is not employed on a full-time basis, resides in your home, and depends on you for over half of his or her financial support.
You are eligible for the plan if you were previously enrolled in MetLife Legal Plans through your employer. Hawaii and Maine residents may not be eligible for this individual plan. If you are a resident of these states, contact the legal plans call center at (833) 214-4175 or clientservice@legalplans.com.
