Energy Saving Tips That Lead to Big Savings
While we typically think of energy improvements coming from expensive fixes like replacing windows or installing solar panels, there are many changes you can make on a smaller scale that could add up to big savings—and help you feel better about doing your part for Mother Earth. 1. Install a smart thermostat
It seems obvious: to save money, use less air conditioning in the summer and less heat in the winter. But it can be easy to forget to adjust the thermostat on your way out the door. A smart or programmable thermostat does the work for you—just set it according to your routine and it will automatically turn up or down when you’re not home.
2. Change the filters on your HVAC unit
Your HVAC unit will run more efficiently with clean filters. Swapping them out once every three months should do the trick, but go for once every 45 days if you have pets or allergies. Also, make sure you schedule your annual HVAC service. A unit that’s working properly will cost you less over time than a unit that is leaking or draining improperly.
3. Clean behind your laundry and fridge
When dust collects around the motor of your large appliances, the motor needs to work harder and uses more energy. Vacuum behind your appliances whenever you deep clean to remove dust, pet hair, and debris.
4. Switch out your light bulbs
LED and CFL light bulbs have come a long way from their ultra-bright, spiral-shaped early days. Now, you can buy them in funky Edison bulb styles, with warmer glows and with a wide range of wattages. You can even find LED holiday string lights and motion sensor lights for the outdoors. And of course, turn your lights off when they’re not in use.
5. Schedule an energy audit
Many utility companies will conduct energy audits for free or a nominal charge. When the audit is complete, you’ll have a clear idea of where your heating or cooling systems may be costing you money, and suggestions for how to upgrade down the road.
