Bringing Color and Joy to School Children in Mexico

It was a hot summer morning in Mexico City. In the district of El Pedregal, a local primary school was alive with color and the hum of work. It was the summer holidays and not the schoolchildren making noise – but volunteers from MetLife Mexico, paint rollers in hand, stepping in to make a difference.

Thanks to 90 employees from MetLife Mexico’s Finance team and MetLife Foundation partner Educa, a primary school named Voluntarias Vicentinas de la Santa Cruz was redecorated and brightened up. The Finance team spent their annual offsite meeting both team-building and giving their time to help the school, which serves some of Mexico City’s youngest children from low-income families. When the kids came back from summer break, they were in for a surprise — they found their classrooms transformed, with new ways to play, including games painted on the playground floor.

MetLife Mexico Volunteers Arriving To Help A Local School

Educa, an education nonprofit based in Mexico, first partnered with MetLife Foundation more than four years ago and has improved the lives of over 3,000 school kids across Central and South America. MetLife Foundation focuses on improving the financial health of low-income people and families, and also giving MetLife employees the chance to volunteer and make an impact in their local communities.

“All the teachers and students were so surprised and pleased to see the improvements that MetLife made,” says Andrea Flamand, Director of Fundraising at Educa. “The kids have really benefitted from the work done by the volunteers. It gives them a decent place to continue studying and it gives them color and joy every day, which helps to stimulate their minds and capacity to learn.”

“This was a really different experience for the MetLife team,” explains Nalleli Garcia, Social Responsibility and Foundation Manager, MetLife Mexico. “And the benefit to the school was so visible and everyone was so thankful that we could make this possible.

“We’re working on some similar activities this year with school improvement because it works really well with large teams. For our MetLife employees, it’s the chance to make a social impact. Some of them haven’t done any volunteering before, but we hope this will convince them to do it regularly and inspire them in future.”

Andrea Flamand Speaks About MetLife Foundation and Educa's Partnership

“The experience between Educa and the Finance team was extraordinary,” reflects Nalleli. “Our projects often focus on helping low-income adults achieve financial health, but our team really enjoys helping kids too, because one day they’ll be the adults making the difference in their communities. Part of what the Foundation does is help to build stronger communities and create links between our MetLife associates, sales force agents and promotores, and our family, friends and the outside community.”

MetLife Foundation is one of our most important partners,” explains Andrea. “As well as their financial donations, they give us something more: their time and talent, too. MetLife Foundation’s support has been important in the development of Educa and allowed us the opportunity to grow. There are no words to thank MetLife Foundation for the support it has given us.”
